Painted Pillar Clocks

The Fate Wooden Clock Series Was Inspired by Eccentric Indian Architecture

The crossover between different design fields is evident in items like these pillar clocks, which have been directly inspired by architecture in India. The highly creative Subinay Malhotra looked to the monuments of his south Asian country, appropriating their forms into the redesign of a commonplace product.

Turned wood assumes intricate silhouettes that cinch and swell with elegance and intriguing detail. To pull the vibrant colors of Indian tradition into his works, Subinay used a contemporary method of dipping the posts directly into buckets of bright paint. Sets of hour and minute hands were simply applied to these.

The Fate collection of standing floor pillar clocks and tabletop clocks demonstrates how designers and consumers are tired to the conventional circular faces of analog timepieces. This series takes advantage of an opportunity to use sculpture to display the hour.
