Giant Phallic Graffiti

Russian Art Collective Voina Wins Modern Art Prize

Any art historian can tell you that a lot of artworks are either shaped like a phallus or can be interpreted as symbols of one; however, none of those pieces in history are as unabashed as the Russian art collective Voina. This art group won a modern art prize for the giant phallus drawn in front of the FSB (Federal Security Services of the Russian Federation, successors to the KGB) in St. Petersburg.

The official Innovation 2011 award in the category of visual art was awarded to Voina for the giant Phallic artwork entitled ‘A Penis in KGB Captivity’ along with a 10 000 € prize.

The phallus measures about 60 meters and was drawn last year on the Liteini Bridge in St. Petersburg. The Liteini bridge is situated in the center of the old imperial capital and lifts up at night to let ships pass. When night falls and the bridge lifts up, the giant phallus stands erect right in front of the FSB head office!
