The new Pentagon Memorial was unveiled today, September 11, in honor of the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The Pentagon Memorial project was built as a symbol of recognition for the thousands of lives lost as well as all those impacted by the September 11, 2001 attacks. 184 people died in the Pentagon itself, and this park and its architectural marvels are intended to bring peace to those still mourning, and a historical reminder to those who visit the site.
The Pentagon Memorial park is inscribed with one-hundred and eighty-four memorial units. Each unit is dedicated to an individual victim - its placement and place within the collective field is a unique instance," according to the site.
Ground Zero in New York City was a gathering place for hundreds of people who devoted a moment of silence this morning in honor of the World Trade Center tower collapses. A similar moment of silence was held in Washington, led by President George W. Bush at the White House.
"The field of memorial units is arranged as a timeline of the victim’s ages, from 3 to 71," The Pentagon Memorial site says. "The western edge of the site is defined with an ‘age wall’ that grows an inch in height relative to the age represented by the rows of memorial units."
