Fusilli Light Fixtures

The Pasta Lamp Collection Serves Up Italian Cuisine for Illumination

Design with unconventional materials presents its viewers with food for thought -- must we stick to assembling common constituents in order to produce practical objects? Such a question is undoubtedly answered in the case in the Pasta Lamp collection.

The designer felt that fabric was not necessary to create effective lampshades for the five table lamps in this idiosyncratic set. Instead, Tetsuo Takahashi chose different types of Italian pasta, combining like varieties together into eccentric light diffusers with diverse degrees of coverage and exposure of the radiant source inside.

Penne, rigate, fusilli and calamari noodles were arranged in straight lines or chaotic clusters, giving each fixture distinctive character. The unique and somewhat irregular textures of the edible materials create fascinating shadow effects for the Pasta Lamp collection.
