2009 is the year of astronomy, and in Oberhausen, one of the biggest cities of Germany's Ruhrgebiet, this is celebrated with an interesting exhibition.
The exhibit takes place in an industrial memorial called the Gasometer, a more than one hundred meter high former storage place for gas. It "takes its visitors off on a journey into the cosmos. It shows our solar system as a huge process of growth and decay," according to the Gasometer site.
One of the main attractions is sure to be a gigantic sculpture, with a diameter of 25 meters, made to resemble the moon, showcased under the 100 meter high roof of the Gasometer. The extraordinary location, with its wide rooms and the interesting sculptures, creates an out of this world atmosphere for a galactic exhibit.
