Community Clothing's Organic Athletic Uses Natural Materials

The majority of athleticwear available is made from plastic-based materials, presenting environmental challenges and potentially compromising breathability during performance, and Community Clothing's Organic Athletic is a new sportswear line that's plastic-free and compostable. In the 13-piece range, there are 70s-inspired designs that do away with non-biodegradable, oil-based synthetic plastic materials like polyester, nylon, polyurethane and elastane. Instead, the sustainable sportswear designs make the most of plant-based textiles.

Free from plastics, the athletic apparel boasts the ability to decompose in a garden in as little as a week. The designs take a page from the past and reference simpler times and simpler materials, such as when Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile wearing cotton shorts, a cotton vest and leather shoes. For this line, fashion designer Patrick Grant sourced organic vintage athleticwear on eBay and assessed that elastics would be the most challenging component to replace.
