Precipitous Mountaineering Buildings

The 'Norwegian Mountaineering Center' is a Haven for Climbers

In building the Norwegian Mountaineering Center in Andalsnes, Reiulf Ramstad Architects took an abstract approach to the main theme of the project. The Norwegian firm created a steep, angular main tower with a brown, gray and white pixelated facade that resembles the snow-capped mountains in the surrounding environment.

Part of the appeal of the Norwegian Mountaineering Center's design is that visitors to Andalsnes will be able to gauge the building's purpose even if they aren't familiar with it. And, with such a landmark, the city has the opportunity to become a locus for climbers from across Scandinavia.

On the interior, the Norwegian Mountaineering Center contains a climbing wall for its members. The building also acts as a visitors center to encourage people to get interested and involved in climbing.
