The Niue 'Star Wars' Currency Hopes to Boost its Government Coffers

The world is no stranger to special-edition coins, but the Niue 'Star Wars' currency is taking it to the next level. As though inspired by collectible stamps that feature images of pop culture icons and cult classic hits, these coins will be issued in the South Pacific island to (hopefully) boost Niue's flagging government coffers.

Produced by New Zealand Mint, the Niue 'Star Wars' currency will be available in sets of four, each of which will be made up of one ounce of silver. Although they can be used as regular legal tender, with a face value of NZ$2, they are worth considerably more than that. The retail price alone for four coins is about $382.
