Hurricane-Resistant Eco Homes

This New Orleans House Design Mixes Tradition with Disaster-Proofing

This conceptual design for a New Orleans house was one of three winning entries created for the American Institute of Architects’ Designing Recovery Competition. The design of the ‘Shotgun [Remix]’ house was developed by GOATstudio and builds on the aims of the Make it Right Foundation to combine the look of a traditional single-family home with modern materials, clever space planning with environmentally-friendly features.

In response to increasing rainfall, rising sea levels and the risk of flooding during a hurricane, the Shotgun [Remix] home is elevated 7’ above the ground. In the case of water buildup, water runoff can be filtered through its rain garden.

As well as its several features for keeping families safe and dry, GOATstudio’s design has several eco-friendly features as well — it could attain a revered LEED Platinum status and provide homeowners with solar energy.
