Legendary Author Campaigns

Joan Didion Has Been Named the New Face of Celine

American novelist and journalist Joan Didion has been chosen as the new face of Celine.

Phoebe Philo, the French fashion house's creative director, specifically chose Didion for the campaign, which was photographed by Juergen Teller. The campaign's first image shows the literary legend outfitted in a black turtleneck and matching black sunglasses that obscure her expression from view. A dangling gold pendant necklace is Didion's only other discernible accessory, and her mouth is arranged in a hard, straight line as she (presumably) stares into the camera.

The latest Celine collection draws its inspiration from the 1970s, a decade in which Didion experienced much of her success. Most of her work is concerned with the dissolution of American society and the individual and collective anxiety that follows such fragmentation.
