Neon Rap Portraits

Natalie Wong Creates Stylish Pieces That Blend Modern Art with Modern Music

Hong Kong-based multimedia artist Natalie Wong's newest collection is entitled 'Neon Rap Portraits.' In this collection, Wong produced 12 neon portraits of iconic rappers, including The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur, Nas, JAY-Z, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Pharrell, Kanye West, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. To create these pieces, Wong produced continuous line drawings of each rapper. After that, she traced the sketches with electroluminescent wire and affixed them to a transparent display.

When asked about the inspiration behind Neon Rap Portraits, Wong explained that this concept came from the drawings of artists such as Picasso and Schiele. Furthermore, Wong attempted to mimic the rappers' style through the lines in her continuous sketches. The use of neon was meant to mimic the urban street scene that holds up the genre and is also in a way a reference to the artist's environment.
