Moisés Hernández Created a Colorful Chair with Insect-Based Dye

Many wooden chairs with natural finishes tend to stick to neutral tones that play up the characteristics of the material but Moisés Hernández created a boldly colored naturally designed chair that offers a different approach with cochineal dye. The bright pink Grana chair was created by the Mexican designer using a pigment that comes from pulverized cochineal bugs and a technique that's been used to dye fabrics in Mexico for thousands of years. Adapted for maple wood, the technique produced results that are just as visually striking.

There are two versions of the chair: one that's all pink and another that's made with a mix of red, orange, purple and pink dyes.

As Hernández sees it, "There are some new and innovative technologies that are transforming the industry but ancestral techniques can represent another approach for a promising future."
