Murder as Art

Morbid Creativity by Photographers Fascinated With Faux Killings

While television audiences around the world are fascinated with the murderous escapades of serial killer Dexter, it seems photographers are experiencing a growing fascination with killing their subject matter also.

I stumbled upon the work of photographers Haley Jane Samuelson and Michael Cogliantry on the same day, two different artists that depict scenes of murder, or impending murder, in their photographs.

Cogliantry’s ‘Hands of the Killer’ collection presents a disturbing series of images from the viewpoint of a killer stalking and approaching his victims.

Samuelson’s work presents a slightly more graphic portrait of murder, yet her images are infused with an odd sense of playfulness through her use of brightly coloured papier-mache head masks worn by her characters.
