The Ferrolic Alarm Clock Forms Time Through Moving Bubbles

Eindhoven University of Technology designer Zelf Koelman created this unique lamp that displays the time through moving bubbles. The ink-like blotches swivel and swim around the screen of the clock and eventually form numbers. The lamp itself resembles the moving bubbles of a lave lamp.

The Ferrolic alarm clock is made with Ferro Fluids, which are actually magnetized liquids. When combined with a magnetic force field, the blotches and bubbles appear to be moving on their own. While the viewer only sees the moving dots, there are actually electromagnets that push and pull the blotches together to mimic legible numbers.

The clock also has the ability to be connected to web applications so the graphic bubbles can be altered and forced to create different animations -- like animals and words.
