DIY Accurate Mood Lighting

The 'Mood Lamp' Changes Colors with Your Facial Expressions

Using readily available image processing software and an IKEA lamp, developer Vittorio Cuculo created a 'Mood Lamp.' Using a webcam and an Arduino, the lamp recognizes your facial expressions in order to determine your mood. That data is then used to change the color of light that the lamp is emitting.

Plotting emotions on a linear scale between negative and positive feelings, the mood lamp either goes towards pink or blue. A shade of pink means that the user is happy where as blue means that the user is sad. The algorithms recognize basic gestures such as smiling and frowning along with other facial movements. Smiling widely will bring the lamp to shift to pink whereas frowning makes the lamp shift to blue.
