The Euro has just had a beautiful makeover as a result of a design competition run by the Dutch Ministry of Finance.
The newly-minted design for the five Euro coin is the work of artist and architect, Stani Michiels, who won the "Netherlands and Architecture" themed competition.
The front of the coin was created by incorporating a list of the 109 most prominent Dutch architects, which were placed in order of how many hits they receive when an internet search is performed on them. In addition, the names are cast in varying font weights to create a portrait of Queen Beatrix.
The back of the coin displays recently published architecture books with their spines positioned to create a map of The Netherlands in the negative space.
