Amsterdam-based street photographer Caspar Claasen busies himself capturing moments of solitude experienced by subjects both young and old.
The camera operates as a proxy by which one can document, or even exacerbate, moments of solitude. The resulting photographs create a sense of what Claasen likes to refer to as "tragicomical." He explains, "It's something we can all recognize ourselves in -- laugh, grin, but at the same time, have a sense of empathy." This universal, recognizable feeling is what makes Claasen's work so understanding and accessible.
Even photos with no human subject -- shots of a desolate landscape, or an inanimate object -- are strangely touching, giving off an anthropomorphic quality that is just as relatable as its human counterparts.
