The Mokumono Bike is Quick and Inexpensive to Produce

The Mokumono bike is a new type of bicycle that is made using state-of-the-art production methods. Over the past few decades, most American and European bicycle companies have outsourced their manufacturing to countries with lower production costs such as China and Taiwan. Now an Amsterdam-based startup is trying to revive the Dutch tradition of bike manufacturing by using new technology.

The Mokumono bike consists of a frame that can be made almost entirely automatically. This process involves robots that put sheets of aluminum into a press and then stamp out the frame in two halves. A laser cutter then trims the edges before the halves are welded together. The entire process takes less than an hour to complete, making the manufacturing process quick and inexpensive.

The startup is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to bring its technology to the Netherlands and help restore the country's once strong bike manufacturing sector.
