The Mill Junction Student Housing Uses Silos & Shipping Containers

Local African property developers at Citiq have attempted to address the issue of the shortage of student housing in the city of Johannesburg in South Africa. Citiq has managed to create an affordable student housing complex called Mill Junction using the city’s used silo storage units and old shipping containers.

The 40-meter building is comprised of 11 storey silos with additional stacked units using shipping containers for floor space. The Mill Junction has 375 apartment units, lounges, libraries, study rooms and computer rooms. The towering structure offers panoramic views of the city with the addition of balconies inside the units that provide expansive views of the surrounding landscape. Window panels were also fitted on to the exterior wall of the structure.

The building was completed in January 2014 and will be scheduled to open for students next February.
