Undersea Data Centers

This Microsoft Data Center is Located Beneath the Pacific Ocean

Gaming enthusiasts would recognize the name 'Leona Philpot' as a character from the popular Halo video game series, but tech geeks will tell you that it's also the name of a Microsoft datacenter capsule that, incredibly, was installed underwater about half a mile off the US Pacific coast.

The datacenters are located inside protective waterproof shells that measure about 3 x 2 meters, so they're not big enough to significantly interfere with the marine environment.

Given that a sizeable proportion of the world's population resides in coastal areas, it makes good sense to place datacenters close to them without taking up valuable room on land. As more Microsoft datacenters are installed underwater, they will help reduce Internet latency and lag times thanks to their proximity to users living in coastal areas.
