Powerhive Brings Sustainable Energy to Developing Communities

As discussed in the recently released Gates Annual Letter, renewable energy (such as microgrid technology) is an extremely important strategy when it comes to eradicating poverty. Powerhive brings solar power to rural Africa with mobile-controlled solar grids.

They also developed a cloud-based platform called Honeycomb to manage the small-scale operations in their endeavor to bring electricity to homes in rural areas where energy providers are significantly less likely to serve. Based in Berkeley, California and Nairobi, Kenya, Powerhive installs sustainable microgrid technology and democratizes renewable energy. The microgrids can power small groups of a few hundred residences at a time, which is less expensive than putting individual solar panels on every home.
