Massive Sustainable Airports

The New Mexico City Airport Will Be One Of the Most Sustainable

The Foster + Partners architecture practice, which has designed airports in Kuwait, Jordan and London, is designing the new Mexico City airport, which will be one of the biggest and most environmentally friendly airports in the world.

The new Mexico City airport's design calls for a prefabricated system that allows for rapid construction without the need for unsightly scaffolding. The airport has a single terminal design that uses a steel gridshell.

The airport will be designed to minimize walking distances and make it easy to navigate. Internal trains and underground tunnels will not be needed for passengers to move around easily, safely and quickly. The airport's structure will be serviced from below, so pipes, ducts, etc. will all be hidden from sight.

Construction on the airport is scheduled to begin in 2015 and the airport is expected to open in 2018.
