Urban Commuting Illustrations

This Exhibit Features Art Commissioned by the Metropolitan Transport

The Society of Illustrator's latest exhibition features artwork commissioned from New York City's Metropolitan Transport Authority over the past three decades. The work is diverse and varied, ranging from print to mosaic, and dates back to the late '80s to present day. Artists included in the collection include Peter Sis, Olimpia Zagnoli and Sophie Blackall.

The Metropolitan Transport Authority is heavily invested in promoting artists. Every year, the MTA commissions five or six transport-related works, which are then printed on posters and cards throughout public transit stations, bus stops and subway cars.

This exhibition has curated several of the MTA's commission works, but it barely makes a dent in the hundreds of pieces that have come through New York's transport network.
