Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, who also goes by the name Vhils, was recently commissioned to create a mural that challenges people's preconceptions of medical marijuana. He is doing so by relating the controversial plant to graffiti.
Both graffiti and marijuana are seen as things "outside conventional institution" so they have a unique connection to one another; they are wild-growing and can be found in urban environments.
The art will be part of a Phytology project that allows visitors to "explore and freely harvest" marijuana to produce their own medical remedies, such as tea. The art is currently underway and is being created through the use of diagrams. Each diagram will depict the molecular structures that belong to the medicinal plants so people will see the plant as being more scientific than recreational.
