For over 1,000 years, Matrera Castle, located near Cadiz, Spain, stood strong, a testament to the durability of medieval stone masonry. After decades of abandonment, though, Matrera Castle's walls were reduced to rubble. However, the Spanish firm Carquero Arquitectura has revitalized the historical building using a creative technique that appears both modern and ancient.
The Spanish firm decided to rebuild Matrera Castle in the same shape as the original building, but, instead of using the same brick and constructing a facsimile, Carquero Arquitectura built the new portion from lime plaster. Then, they covered the bright white material in the remaining segments of the crumbled castle, preserving the artifacts that were still at the site.
The resultant building maintains the cultural landmark of the ancient castle while still looking attractive to the modern eye.
