For her latest series, 'HER,' photographer Marjorie Salvaterra created black-and-white tableaus of women that look like something out of an old film.
Through hyperbolic gesture and surreal composition, the project makes a comment on the trials and tribulations of femininity. All together, the images paint a picture of what it "means" to be a woman, according to an unspoken, ubiquitous standard.
Savaterra's friends enthusiastically participated, gladly donning wigs and gowns in order to symbolize the "every-woman." The scenes include a naked woman standing in front of a theater ("the stories we tell ourselves"), a group of women lying face down on the ground ("Eve unraveled") and a shot mimicking the Last Supper. Though imbued with a sense of melancholy, the aptly named images are intended to "assure HER that she is not on this path alone."
