Marco Casagrande Creates a Giant Tunnel on the Beach

Finnish architect Marco Casagrande recently completed the giant 'Sandworm' installation for the the Beaufort04 art project in Belgium. The sculpture snakes along the Belgian coast for 148 feet among tall beach grasses that shift swiftly in the wind.

Casagrande describes his work as, "weak architecture," or, a structure which will give way to nature over time, slowly becoming part of the natural environment. For now though, the Sandworm is anything but inconspicuous. It is large enough that a full grown person may walk into it and come out the other end.

The sculpture is made from countless branches, thereby living up to its creator's principle of "weak architecture." It is not the most sturdy design, which will help it become one with nature over time.
