Martin Schindler Recounts a Classic Novel Using Pen and Paper

Dutch artist Marcel Schindler recently produced a one-of-a-kind synopsis of Ernest Hemingway's classic novella, 'The Old Man and the Sea.' Using only a pen and a few sheets of paper, Schindler recounts the plot of Hemingway's work through stop-motion animation; like the great writer, Schindler is pithy to the point of austerity.

Most of 'The Old Man and the Sea' takes place on the ocean. The old man seeks out and pursues a great fish far out into open waters. However, the real plot and depth of the book is the inner-dialogue of the old man: his sympathy for the fish despite their conflict; his affection for the boy who visits him at his shack on the shore; and his admiration for the baseball player Joe DiMaggio.

Schindler sets his animation against the appropriately titled song, 'Sail' by Awolnation. The music helps to convey the emotional undertones that flow beneath the waves of the plot.
