The Shinkansen maglev train, a futuristic venture of the Central Japan Railway Company, topped 500 km/h in its first ever test run with passengers on board. Japan is already famed for speedy trains, with its bullet trains hitting speeds of 320 km/h, but the Shinkansen, which uses electromagnetic technology to however above the track, shatters that record.
Testing on the new maglev train began last year, although the first prototype was released two years ago. While the train previously carried out unmanned journeys, this new test run makes it the first train to carry passengers at such speeds. The passengers were selected by lottery.
The maglev train system is set to be completed in 2027 and halve travel time between Tokyo and Nagoya, a trip that currently takes 80 minutes.
