Plant-Based Body Casts

The Luffa Splint by Mauricio Affonso is Sustainable and Affordable

The Luffa Splint may be made out of an unorthodox material, one that people would assume was reserved solely for the privacy of one's washroom, but that doesn't mean it is a ludicrous creation. Instead, the Luffa Splint is both a sustainable and affordable alternative to more traditional body casts, making it a clever compromise for environmentally conscious individuals.

Designed by Mauricio Affonso, a Brazlian designer based in London, England, the Luffa Splint is part of his award-winning project the Luffa Lab. Made out of the tropical vine plant, the Luffa Splint is a lightweight, low-cost, breathable, and all-natural medical device created using compression moulding technology and a water-based thermoset binder. It is also antimicrobial and biodegradable.
