At once disgusting and pretty, the latest work of artist Louise Zhang revolves around jars of colorful liquid that separates and congeals inside. Made with everything from polymer clay to flubber, the substances take on swirls of bright pastel hues that are hard not to appreciate. Yet the longer a person stares at Louise Zhang's work, the more revolted by it they will become.
Dubbed Slosh Samples, the art installation was inspired by such childhood cartoons as Spongebob Squarepants or Ren and Stimpy. Currently working on her MFA at UNSW Art & Design, Louise Zhang shows that juxtaposition between two seemingly disparate elements can often result in conflicting emotions and reactions that are undeniably captivating. She describes her work as "evocative of confectionery -- the gooey, the sticky, and the sensation of sweets melting."
