Illusory Spiralling Timepieces

The Loading Wall Clock Has Rotating Coils Instead of Hands

At first glance, you might find it difficult to decipher the Loading Wall Clock. This quirky chronograph has no immediately recognizable hands and it certainly has no numbers. Its circular shape and its mounted position might be your only indications that it is, in fact, a clock.

Esben Oxholm's design centers on a base and a core that do not move, plus two concentric rings that rotate at different rates. The outermost loop functions as the minute indicator and the disk just inside of it serves to display the hour. Both individual bands have uneven surfaces that gradually rise from the shallow middle of the Loading Wall Clock. They finally reach points of maximum projection, cutting in and creating sharp ridges. Your eyes should follow these as they revolve, moving as markers of the time.
