It is one thing for Chinese artist and sculptor Liu Wei to create these impressive cityscape sculptures and it is another thing to craft them from stacks of old schoolbooks. Balancing precariously between the notions of order and disorder, Liu Wei's sprawling creations depict cities in metamorphosis, something that he has become accustomed to while living in Beijing, China.
Liu Wei's first solo exhibit, titled Foreign, is currently being held at the lmine Rech Gallery in Paris, France, until mid-May 2012. The stunning city sculptures showcased in this gallery are held together using steel rods and wood clamps. Although the skyline remains fabricated and thus unidentifiable, Liu Wei has modeled many of the structures after iconic building landmarks such as the Pentagon and Saint Peter’s Basilica.
