The High-Speed Light Sheet Microscopy Technique Reveals Cell Behavior

High-speed light sheet microscopy images of zebra fish larva have provided insight into the inner workings of the brain. Scientists at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Janelia Farm Research Campus developed the technology, unveiling their findings to viewers via a video.

Displayed in the Janelia Farm Research video are individual cells. As the shots feature the entire brain of the zebra fish larva, a vertebrate animal, the movement and activity of these cells are also shown. The light sheet tools enabled the team to track approximately 80% of the neurons. This was accomplished as rapid snapshots were taken every 1.3 seconds, a time frame that mimics the very patterns that are observed in the brain.
