Emotive Inflatable Masks

The Liǎn Mask by Jann Choy Reacts to Online Behavior Using AI

The Liǎn mask created by Central Saint Martins graduate Jann Choy is an experimental design that explores the intersection of offline and online personas. The mask has an inflatable form and it is made to react to online behavior with artificial intelligence.

The theatrical mask has the capacity to swell in certain places based on positive and negative reactions, meaning that the cheeks might puff up in one instance, while other interactions may cause the details on the forehead to grow and retract.

Inspired by the traditional Chinese performance art biàn liǎn—which quite literally means "face changing"—Choy created the Liǎn mask as a graduate project while studying at Central Saint Martins College. The project was awarded the Mullenlowe Nova Awards for Fresh Creative Talent.
