Illusive Courtyard Cafes

The L'Espoir Blanc is Arranged Around a Courtyard

Tokyo-based architect Yuko Nagayama designed the 'L'Espoir Blanc,' a cafe and sweet shop located in Okamoto, Japan. Though it's a single structure, the cafe is designed to look as though it's comprised of two separate buildings wrapping around a courtyard.

The courtyard is located inside a cavity along the western elevation, causing the building to appear as though it is actually two. The front and rear facades, as well as the courtyard's surrounding walls, are glazed to allow passers-by to look inside. From the inside, it ensures that the courtyard is visible from nearly every vantage point, and that the interior has access to plenty of natural light.

Nagayama maintains that the structure is the most "open-minded" on the street.
