This Technology Lets LED Lightbulb Devices Communicate With Each Other

Engineers and researchers at the University of Virginia have created an algorithm that makes it possible for any device fitted with regular visible-light LEDs to communicate with other equipment fitted with similar LEDs. So for example, an LED display in your radio could communicate with your LED-equipped coffee maker.

This system could be used in places where radio waves are problematic or prohibited, such as in the vicinity of medical equipment in hospitals, in certain manufacturing environments and in passenger aircraft cabins.

This technology is highly promising as it uses the now-common LED lightbulb in applications involving the Internet of Things, which offers a whole range of fascinating applications in the home and in other settings.
