New Zealand Design Student Emily Steel Designs The Little Slide Dress

New Zealand design student Emily Steel comes up with the Little Slide Dress, which recycles old-school film, combines it with light-sensitive LED-lights, and applies the to the classic black dress.  In bright lighting, the film that envelops the dress merely comes off as shiny resembling patent leather. While in darker settings, the light-sensors of the LEDs, which are hidden under the slides, turn on projecting the images like a light table. Even doper, there is a pulse function the lights can be set on.

Steel was inspired by traditional cinema and the prerequisite of darkness to truly enjoy the film. She always found this magical and sought a way to translate this notion to clothing.

The combination of LEDs and film reels seem like a no-brainer, but no recognized fashion designer has implemented this technology with this technique. On the other hand, I’m sure we will see this applied to gimmicky hats, sunglasses and jewelry during holidays and music festivals as well. At any rate, it’s a fabulous new use for film, which actually takes a lot of energy to properly dispose.
