Lebensmittel (meaning 'foodstuff' in German) is a photo series, captured by German photographer Michael Schmidt, which consists of a wide-ranging exploration of the global food industry.
Schmidt spent seven years traveling around the world photographic factory farms, industrial slaughterhouses, farm animals as well as individual food items. The photo series is intended to get viewers thinking about where their food comes from, and how extreme consumption is changing the world.
Schmidt uses grids of photographs that draw the eye to sequences, hinting at narratives and repetition.
The photos in Lebensmittel show the food industry as being both mysterious and ruthlessly efficient in the manner in which it churns out products. The photos are dark, alluring and disturbing. Schmidt won the prestigious Prix Pictet award for the series.
