The LabDisk Diagnostic Device Can Detect Multiple Diseases

The LabDisk is a diagnostic device that can be used to test for a variety of devices. Developed through the DiscoGnosis project in a bid to improve existing means of infectious disease diagnosis in Africa, the device looks an awful lot like a CD player.

To use the device, a sample of the patient's blood must be taken and placed onto the disc. The disc is then inserted into the companion machine for processing. Disease pathogens are then identified from their DNA and RNA. The system can identify the malaria parasite as well as bacteria that can cause diseases like typhoid, pneumonia and dengue fever.

The LabDisk can even be altered to detect different diseases as required, simply by changing its bio-components. This device will surely have a huge impact in regions of the world where quick, easy diagnosis of diseases is crucial but unavailable.
