Tumultuous Tomato Fights

La Tomatina of Bunol is a 65-Year Tradition

La Tomatina of Bunol has been an annual food fight in the Spanish city for so long that no one even remembers how it began. Recently counting around 45,000 participants and 250,000 tomatoes, each year the streets are covered with a red slippery paste.

Many myths surround the birth of La Tomatina of Bunol, and one suggests it may have started after angered townspeople attacked the city council. Whatever the origin, La Tomatina persists as a comradely August festival that will be hitting these Spanish streets this year in a couple weeks’ time. It looks like a splash, but the cleanup must be rotten.
