The ‘La Dolce Vita’ is an exhibition that explores celebrity and paparazzi culture in Rome in the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition includes several paparazzo-taken shots of the many Hollywood celebrities who frequented Rome during that era. At the time, many Hollywood films were shot in Rome due to low studio costs there.
While many of the celebrities are shown lapping up the attention and literally enjoying la dolce vita (which translates to ‘the sweet life’ in Italian), others are less welcoming. The most incredible photo of the series shows a furious Anita Ekberg—the Swedish sex symbol of yesteryear—confronting a paparazzo with a bow and arrow.
Other highlights of ‘La Dolce Vita’ include a clandestinely captured photo of heartthrobs Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor kissing on a boat.
The exhibition can be seen at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in London from 30 April to 29 June.
