Courtyard Kindergarten Schools

The DS Nursery Offers Gorgeous Garden Views

Japanese firm Hibino Sekkei joined forces with sister studio Youji no Shiro to design the DS Nursery, a kindergarten school located in Japan's Ibaraki Prefecture.

The interior is characterized by unique items such as blackboard walls, round toilet cubicles and furniture optimized for the size of the students. A planted courtyard, complete with play furniture and climbing walls, surrounds the indoor areas. Much like the blades of a windmill, the architects explain, the indoor rooms of the school fan out against the courtyard.

Views of the garden are facilitated by floor-to-ceiling windows, which open out to sheltered terraces, protected by the building's overhanging roof. Other windows, recessed deep into the walls of the corridors, provide seating nooks for the children.
