KereKere Coffee Kiosk in Melbourne Lets Customers Pick a Cause

It's been exciting to feature an abundance of cause-oriented and ethical coffee brands on Social Business, and today we're adding another to that list: KereKere Coffee, a cafe-style kiosk focused on generosity and community.

KereKere, based in Melbourne, Australia operates under the motto to "give without expectation."

Every month, the social business sets aside $1,000 to go to a charitable cause in the Environmental, Cultural, Social or Health category. Each time a customer makes a purchase, they have the opportunity to select the cause they would most like to see supported.

In addition, KereKere hires two young people a year to learn 'the art of coffee making' and incorporate an attitude of generosity into the business.

KereKere was started by James Murphy, a social worker who wanted to apply his passion for community and ethics to business. He launched the first KereKere coffee cart at The University of Melbourne in 2007. Today it's evolved into the inviting kiosk seen in the photos.

"KereKere is named after the concept that inspired it - 'KereKere', a Fijian custom in which a relative or neighbour can request something that is needed and it must be willingly given with no expectation of repayment," the site explains. "This spirit is the core of the KereKere social and business model – give without expectation."
