For her latest series, German-Hungarian artist Katharina Roters documents homes that have been ornamented in an attempt to revive a sense of individuality.
The homes are all 'Hungarian Cubes,' a style of home that is closely associated with post-war communism. In an attempt to resist the imposed uniformity of the regime, inhabitants took to decorating their homes to reflect their idiosyncrasies. Though Roters found herself drawn to the geometric aesthetic of the homes, she soon learned that the history of the style has lead to "disregard and hostility," as well as demolition.
With this project, Roters attempts to document a style that is slowly being wiped out; her book stands to chronicle the homes' unlikely beauty.
