The Kalha Heater is a low-cost radiator designed to keep the world's poorest from freezing to death. Designer Péter Toronyi was inspired to create this heater to help the lower-class in Hungary who were freezing to death due to sleeping outside in the cold and from sleeping inside with no heater.
A total of 270 people froze to death in Hungary in 2011, with 158 dying inside their own homes. The Kalha Heater was created as an inexpensive way to stay warm and runs off waste wood. The fireclay structure of the Kalha keeps it warm for up to two hours after the fire has died down. The heater can be used as a stool, a bed warmer and a stove. Toronyi estimates that the cost of producing one Kalha Heater would be between four and six dollars.
