Small-Scale Ancient Grains

Pereg Natural Foods' Kañiwa is Half the Size of Regular Quinoa Seeds

Over the past few years, ancient grains like quinoa have come into the spotlight as rich sources of protein and fiber—but Kañiwa may be on track to become the newest superfood.

Kañiwa is cousin to quinoa that's smaller, darker and sweeter, with a size that's smaller than a regular quinoa seed. As such, companies like Pereg Natural Foods are introducing this new food to consumers by branding it "Baby Quinoa." One of the biggest difference between quinoa and Kañiwa is that the latter boasts more iron and it does not contain saponins, or the bitter flavor that comes from not rinsing quinoa grains properly prior to cooking.

Pereg Natural Foods' Baby Quinoa will be one of the new products to be introduced at this year's Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California.
