Japanese designer Jin Kuramoto's Nadia collection takes inspiration from a subject that few people, and understandably so, are familiar with: Japanese shipbuilding techniques. According to Kuramoto, many Japanese carpenters sourced their techniques from shipbuilders. The furniture found in Nadia is all made using the Japanese kumiki technique.
Kumiki involves interlocking wood to create support. Indeed, many of these pieces look like the frames of wooden ships when viewed from underneath. Nadia first appears to be just another set of modern furniture, but the more you learn about it the more you realize that it's almost a functional history lesson for your home. Jin Kuramoto has indeed found an interesting way to both pay tribute to his country's heritage through his work.
