Bottled Soot Art

Jim Dingilian Creates Landscape Masterpieces in Glass Containers

As baffling as impossible bottles are (bottles that hold objects that don't appear to fit through their mouths), Jim Dingilian goes one step further. He uses the inside of typical glass bottles as canvases -- and that's not all. Jim Dingilian doesn't just paint on the inner walls of his bottles, he first adds a layer of soot generated by a lit candle and then proceeds to create his masterpieces.

Titled The Unexpected Signal, Jim Dingilian's multi-bottle exhibit is comprised of 11 pieces. Jim Dingilian writes, "The miniature scenes I depict are of locations on the edge of suburbia, which seem mysterious or even slightly menacing despite their commonplace nature." The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut is hosting his first solo show this year.
