Local Hong Kong architecture company Thomas Chow Architects has recently collaborated with Danish architecture and design firm Schmidt Hammer Lassen in designing the new Island School located in Hong Kong.
The original school was built over 47 years ago in 1967, and now thanks to the collaboration between Thomas Chow Architects and Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the structure was inspired by the vision of combining architecture with sustainability. The 28,000 square meter site will also be home to some of the world’s most advanced art facilities with plenty of green spaces.
The exterior of the school features cantilevers that act as shelters for students to take refuge from the sun and the region’s tropical climate. At the same time, the structure also allows the flow of natural sunlight into the internal space.
On the central atrium found inside the school, the founding partner at Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, Hammer says, "its balconies, hanging greenery and gardens, it functions as an informal social gathering space where the students can meet and interact. the greenery creates a relaxing atmosphere and contributes positively to the learning environment."
